Deadlines for Lifelines

Once a month, I’ll be posting upcoming deadlines for what writers consider lifelines: grants, fellowships, and residencies, as well as submission calls and the occasional contest. Here are some dreamy ones for February:

The Stadler Center for Poetry at Bucknell University is seeking a very special poet for their annual Philip Roth Residency, which includes a $4,000 stipend and a four-month residency. Submit up to 10 pages of poetry, a CV, and three letters from people who love and admire you by February 20. Fiction and nonfiction writers should monitor their website as well, for future residencies oriented toward their genre. There is no application fee (a rarity!).

Travelers’ Tales, the publishing house that has launched many a travel writer (including yours truly), is seeking contributions for an anthology called 30 Days in Europe, which will feature 30 writers’ journeys to… you guessed it. Story length generally runs between 1,000 to 5,000 words. Deadline is asap, as the book will be published this fall, and payment is $100 plus a copy. Send to submit@travelerstales.com.

A terrific new online literary journal called Kweli (which means “Truth” in Swahili) is seeking submissions in all genres by writers of color. The inaugural edition features work by Nelly Rosario, Patricia Spears Jones, and Thomas Sayers Ellis. Deadline for the Spring/Summer issue is March 15.

The literary journal Florida Review is seeking submissions for its annual literary contest in poetry, fiction, and essay. Submit 3-5 poems or a short story or essay of up to 6,000 words by February 26. There is a $15 entry fee, but winners get $1,000 plus serious bragging rights.

Best of luck and keep me posted!
